Backpack Buddies

It’s hard for many to imagine that students east of the Cooper leave school on Friday and return Monday having had very little to eat over the weekend.

But not every family is as affluent as many of the residents in the community. And in tough economic times like these, food is rationed in individual households.

But the neediest students will now be sent home with nutritious food thanks to the rotary club, which is committed to raising funds, packing back packs, and delivering them weekly to East Cooper schools to make sure kids don’t go home for the weekend without healthy foods and snacks.

The club has partnered with the Lowcountry Food Bank to purchase the items and will donate food to Jennie Moore Elementary School, Laurel Hill Primary School, and St. James-Santee.

The schools have identified 200 students that they believe to be in need.
Photos show some of our Mt Pleasant Rotarians helping to pack the food to distribute to the students.
